Royce Gracie
UFC Hall of Fame · BJJ Legend · Gracie Family
The fighter who stepped into a cage at 178 pounds, submitted three bigger men in one night, and changed combat sports forever.
In 1993, at UFC 1, a 178-pound Royce Gracie defeated three larger opponents in a single night — proving that technique, leverage, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could beat every other martial art. That night launched modern MMA and made the Gracie name synonymous with real fighting.
The Career
Built by Three Tournaments in Fourteen Months
Won the first UFC tournament — three submissions in a single night.
Back-to-back tournament wins — four submissions in one evening.
A third tournament title, cementing BJJ in early MMA.
Inducted into the inaugural UFC Hall of Fame class.
Jiu-Jitsu is the art that allows a smaller person to defeat a bigger person. That’s the whole point.

The Lineage
Four Generations of Gracie
Royce is the son of Hélio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Helio adapted traditional Japanese Jujutsu into a system that let smaller people defeat larger attackers using leverage and technique.
Royce was hand-picked by his brother Rorion Gracie to represent the family at the first UFC — because he wasn’t the biggest or strongest Gracie. His victory would prove the style, not the athlete.

FAQ
Royce Gracie, Answered
Who has beaten Royce Gracie?
Royce has been defeated by Matt Hughes (UFC 60, 2006) and Kazushi Sakuraba (Pride Grand Prix 2000). Sakuraba famously earned the nickname “The Gracie Hunter” after his 90-minute victory. Before those losses, Royce was undefeated in the UFC.
How many UFC fights did Royce Gracie win?

Why did Royce Gracie quit the UFC?
Royce left after UFC 5 (April 1995) over the introduction of time limits, which the Gracie family felt compromised the test of skill the early UFC represented. He returned briefly in 2006 at UFC 60.
What is Royce Gracie doing now?
Royce teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu full-time — running certified academies worldwide, hosting seminars, and promoting authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu self-defense. He holds a 9th-degree Red Belt.
Is Royce Gracie related to Helio Gracie?
Yes — Royce is the son of Hélio Gracie, founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and brother of Rorion, Rickson, Royler, and Relson Gracie. He grew up training BJJ from childhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
